With Microsoft Authenticator, you can easily and securely sign in to any online account using multi-factor authentication, passwordless, or password autofill. There are also additional account management options for Microsoft personal, work, or school accounts.

Overview of multi-factor authentication

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) or two-factor authentication (2FA) provides the second layer of security. If you log in with multi-factor authentication, entering your password will prompt you for an additional way to prove your identity. Approve the notification sent to Microsoft Authenticator or enter the one-time password (OTP) generated by the app. The one-time password (OTP code) has a 30-second countdown timer. With this timer, you don’t have to use the same time-based one-time password (TOTP) twice, and you don’t have to remember the number. One-time passwords (OTPs) do not require a network connection and drain the battery. You can add multiple accounts to your app, including non-Microsoft accounts such as Facebook, Amazon, Dropbox, Google, LinkedIn, and GitHub.

Passwordless start

Use your phone instead of your password to log in to your Microsoft account. Simply enter your username and approve the notifications sent to your phone. Fingerprints, face IDs, or PINs provide the second layer of security for this two-step verification process. Signing in with two-factor authentication (2FA) gives you access to all Microsoft products and services, including Outlook, OneDrive, and Office.

Start autofill

The Microsoft Authenticator app can also auto-fill your password. In the Authenticator app[パスワード]Sign in to the tab with your personal Microsoft account to start synchronizing passwords, including passwords stored in Microsoft Edge. Make Microsoft Authenticator your default autofill provider to start autofilling passwords for mobile-accessed apps and sites. Your password is protected by in-app multi-factor authentication. To access and auto-fill your password on mobile, you need to prove yourself with your fingerprint, Face ID, or PIN. You can also import passwords from Google Chrome and other password managers.

Microsoft personal, work, or school account

At work or school, you may be asked to install Microsoft Authenticator when you access certain files, emails, or apps. You need to use the app to register your device with your organization and add a work or school account. Microsoft Authenticator also supports certificate-based authentication by issuing certificates on the device. This informs your organization that your sign-in request comes from a trusted device and gives you seamless and secure access to additional Microsoft apps and services without having to log in to each one. Microsoft Authenticator supports single sign-on, so once you prove your identity, you don’t have to log in to other Microsoft apps on your device again.
